Music And Choir

Music and Choir

Music is an important part of our worship of God – it has the ability to lift and inspire us in a way that words alone can’t do.  We have a fabulous tradition of choral singing at All Saints which stretches back for more than a century, but we also enjoy modern musical approaches too!

APRIL 2022 -  PRESS RELEASE!

We are pleased to announce that here at All Saints, we have appointed a new Director of Music.  Please welcome Elliott Walker...

IMG 2079 (1)Elliott Walker is a young church musician based in South Yorkshire. Elliott currently holds the position of Director of Music & Organist at St. Paul’s Masbrough, a post he has held since 2014.

Studying at York St. John University, Elliott obtained his degree in English Literature with a dissertation exploring the transmission and appropriation of Anglican Hymns. After this, he attained a Masters in Music from the University of York with a specialism in English Church Music. Elliott’s academic work within church music was embellished by presenting online conferences and presentations on the Musical Implications of the Oxford Music within Parish Churches. Elliott continues his organ studies under the tutelage of Alexander Woodrow, Director of Music of Leeds Minster.
Outside of church music, Elliott accompanies and directs Masbrough Community Choir and privately teaches piano. He also accompanies various choirs and soloists for concerts and examinations. In 2019, he was employed as a Centenary Project Worker for Rotherham Minster, a role that encompasses music work with teaching work in several schools. This harnesses musical learning to different school children in Rotherham. He has recently conducted 80 children for the Choral Outreach Concert at Rotherham Minster.
Elliott has a very varied musical taste that ranges from the Tudor anthems of Byrd to Fleetwood Mac and anything in-between! His favourite musical is ‘Hamilton’ and film, ‘The Great Gatsby.’
Outside of work, Elliott enjoys going on short-distance (and occasional long-distance…) runs. He also enjoys visiting the theatre and opera houses for live performances. Elliott’s ‘chosen Mastermind topic’ is the Titanic as has rather tailored knowledge on this subject. He relishes the opportunity to travel and visit new places with his partner, Emily. His favourite biscuit is Jammie Dodgers and enjoys a glass of Bombay Sapphire gin!

“I’m very much looking forward to joining the team and family at Aston and guiding a fantastic choral tradition built by exceptional predecessors!”

All Saints Aston Choir 2022

The choir (which currently stands at about 20 members) sings regularly at Sunday services, festivals and at weddings, choral music makes our Christmas and Easter celebrations very atmospheric and memorable. Music at Aston church services is usually led by the organ or piano. The choir are a mixed, robed choir (Soprano, Alto, Tenor & Bass) singing in harmony at services and leading the music of the church. They are a capable  choir. The choir includes people of all ages and of all experience levels. They lead the congregation in singing hymns and have a large repertoire of sacred choral music from the traditional to the modern for all forms of church service.

The choir are also available to sing at weddings and will really support your guests' singing. The choir may also sing for weddings at other churches in the area - just ask us about your requirement. Musical Style

Church music now varies over a wide range of genres and styles. Here at Aston we believe in a suitable 'balance' of music styles appropriate for the service. For example on an Evensong the music will usually be very traditional and choral led whereas in an All Age Worship service the music may sometimes be piano or guitar led. Choir led communion will lean towards the traditional, whereas congregational communion will be more modern in feel. Festival services will be bright and joyous whilst services during other liturgical periods may be more thoughtful and reflective. Here at Aston we understand that music in church is there to support and enable worship appropriate to the church calendar. There is a book at the back of Aston church where people can list their favourite hymn or worship song so that we can plan it in to a service where appropriate, please do feel free to let us know your favourite hymns!

Music Steering Group (M.S.G.)

Music at our church is managed via a small team called the Music Steering Group including Chairman Chris Ward and representatives from the choir and congregation. This helps us to ensure music follows the path set down by everyone at All Saints Church. Minutes from these sessions are made available on church notice boards.
